Breaking news as I’m typing this out.
Mad Cave Studios, the independent publisher known for its dedication to storytelling and community, is proud to support the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) with a $10,000 donation to support comic and bookstore retailers impacted by Hurricane Helene. This donation will help provide immediate relief to retailers facing unforeseen financial and medical hardships caused by the disaster, which has devastated large parts of the Southeast.
Mad Cave and Mark London are amazing, but this is special.
This press release got under my skin, so I had to do some digging.
Heritage Auctions acquired a huge DC Comics collection from Christine Farrell, who passed away in April at the age of 73. Farrell is best known in collector circles as the first person to complete a collection of every DC comic from 1935 to the present day.
This is the part of the press release that bothered me:
Farrell was always adamant: “I do not intend to sell the collection,” she told a small PBS station in 1995 when its reporter traveled across Lake Champlain to interview her and browse the piles of history scattered around her house.
The interview is from 1995 and was produced by Moutain Lake PBS in Plattsburgh, New York. The show was called PEOPLE NEAR HERE and was hosted by Derek Muirden and Paul Frederick.
Watch the interview here; Farrell showed up at the 20:00 mark; it is worth your time: https://americanarchive.org/
Watching Derek hold comics from 1939 without boards, I almost lost it! But when Farrell says she doesn’t want to sell her collection, it breaks my heart. I don’t know what the right thing to do is or what she has in her will, but greed always wins out, which makes me sad. My hope is that some of the funds will go to keep her shop, Earth Prime Comics, open for a very long time.
