MFR Newsletter 9/17/2020 — Read more comics, it's the right thing to do.
How goes it, comics people? EIC Anthony here once again to help you turn that stinky, gross cash in your wallet into wonderful funnybooks!
My dad was cleaning out my parents’ attic last week and he pulled out all of mine and my brother’s old crap for us to go through. It’s a chore, but I found two nerdy gems which made it all worthwhile: my original ticket stubs from THE PHANTOM MENACE, and — even better — my set of Marvel Superheroes trading cards! I’ve long thought that these got thrown out years ago, so I was psyched to find them.
So here is my question for you lovely people: Do you still have your OG Marvel trading cards, OR what nerdy childhood memorabilia do you still have and cherish? Could be cards, comics, toys, movie tickets… whatever! Take a pic and tag me @The_Great_Ace and/or @monkeys_robots on Twitter, or @monkeysfightingrobots on Instagram. I would love to see it a) for nostalgia’s sake, and b) so I can show my fiancé that I’m not the only one who holds on to this so-called “junk.”
Review: UMBRELLA ACADEMY: YOU LOOK LIKE DEATH #1 Is Too Mellow To Be A Fever Dream
UMBRELLA ACADEMY is back with its first spin-off series! YOU LOOK LIKE DEATH follows Klaus (my personal favorite Hargreeves sibling from the Netflix show) as an 18-year-old, thrown out of the house by his father and out on a solo adventure. Zac Owens reviews the first issue, and I have to say I’m really impressed with how well he talks about the artwork here. Too often do reviews focus mostly on plot/story, but Zac does an excellent job here discussing how the art team compliments the story and sets a tone for the series.
Review: CYBERPUNK 2077: TRAUMA TEAM #1—Good Tie-In
Elizabeth Buck breaks down the first CYBERPUNK 2077 tie-in comic, and now I’m all the more interested in diving into this world myself. Because I needed more comics and video games on my to-do list!
Review: STILLWATER #1 Sometimes Dead Is Better
Chip Zdarsky, Ramon K. Perez, Mike Spicer, & Rus Wooton’s new Image series about a town where people don’t die starts this week, and I have been looking forward to this one since it was announced. Gabe Hernandez reviews the debut issue.
Personally, Zdarsky has emerged as one of my favorite writers, so I’m really interested to see if he handles horror as well as he does comedy or superheroes. Plus I’ve been a fan of Perez’s work on HAWKEYE and NOVA, among other things, and Spicer and Wooton’s body of work speaks for itself. So yea, this book’s for me.
Review: Shooting Your Way to Heaven in HEAVY #1
There’s a new Vault series starting, which means I am going to talk about it. HEAVY is basically THE PUNISHER but on a heavenly/celestial scale. The solicit info calls it a “story about the existential purpose of dumb boys with big guns,” so check it out, but only if you like cool and original things.
Review: DETECTIVE COMICS #1027 – A Few Batman Stories More…
I know we just had the big DETECTIVE COMICS #1000 celebration issue, but since Batman didn’t actually appear until DETECTIVE #27, DC Comics is doing yet another celebration issue for DETECTIVE COMICS #1027, this time celebrating 1000 issues of Batman actually being in the book.
And look, I know this seems like a cash grab by DC, but honestly… I kind of preferred this issue to DETECTIVE #1000. Not every story is great, but there are a few in here that I found pretty memorable. Matthew Brake did a good job of breaking down the issue as a whole and highlighting the individual stories for the site.
COMIC STRIP • TALES OF MFR
Catch up on the series here: TALES OF MFR
The war between monkeys and robots has raged on for eons; these are the stories that have survived. With art by Jamie Jones and the occasional words by Matt Sardo, Tales of MFR hits the web every Sunday.
For more reviews, interviews, and “Legends of the Longbox”, head over to the website to see what the team’s been working on this week:
That’s all for now! Remember: Darkseid is… but so are we.
Until next week,
