MFR Newsletter 6/24/20 - Less Than 24 Hours Left To Back Monkeys Fighting Robots: The Magazine!
Hey comics fans, EIC Anthony here, hitting your inbox a little early this week and for good reason…
There are officially less than 24 hours left in our Kickstarter for MONKEYS FIGHTING ROBOTS: THE MAGAZINE! The campaign ends at 3pm EST tomorrow (6/25), so I am asking for your help and support one last time so that we can finish strong. Please share this link with your friends and followers and let them know that this is their last chance to get in on the ground floor for the drunken love child of Mad Magazine and Rolling Stone.
This whole campaign has been a wild ride, and we can’t thank our backers and supporters enough. We’ve now raised over $4500. The magazine has gone from 20 pages to 28 pages with a card stock cover and a centerfold poster. We’ve gotten love and support from the likes of Edgar Wright, Scott Snyder, Lance Briggs, and even more of our favorite celebs.
So yes, thank you all for your kindness, and a major shout out to all the incredibly talented people working on comics and articles to pack this mag to the brim. We can’t wait to get this thing in your hands next month.
One last time for the folks in the back: MFR THE MAGAZINE on Kickstarter
And now, on with the show…
Review: WYND #1 – Coming Of Age In The Age Of Magic
I read this new series debut from James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas, and I’m really interested in seeing where this story goes. Wynd isn’t even in this first issue that much, but the way Tynion and Dialynas establish his character and the world pulls you in and leaves you wanting to know more. If you like fantasy stories and/or coming-of-age tales, here’s one you need to pick up.
“The art is whimsical and fun, and the story starts a lot of threads that begs more than a few questions.”
Review: IMMORTAL HULK #34 – Sam Sterns: The Immortal Leader
IMMORTAL HULK is back!! This and DAREDEVIL are my top two Marvel books going on right now. Sheer excellence in just about every issue. We need more superhero horror comics.
“The coming clash between the Hulk and Leader will undoubtedly be an epic one.”
How A Deal Is Struck In WICKED THINGS #2
I binge read GIANT DAYS earlier this year, and it joined the ranks of my favorite series of all time. Lottie Grote was an instant favorite of mine, and I’m a sucker for a murder mystery, so I was hyped to jump into WICKED THINGS and it has not disappointed. No one writes characters like John Allison, and no one brings them to life like Max Sarin and Whitney Cogar.
“vibrant and fun, and just a little bit quirky”
Review: THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE #3 – A Comic That Fires On All Cylinders!
I’m trade-waiting this series, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Every time a new issue drops, I have to fight the urge to just give in and buy the singles. 5-star reviews like this one aren’t helping my resolve.
“This is everything a Question tale should be!”
Review: DEAD BODY ROAD: BAD BLOOD #1 – Don’t Irk the Bartender
I like to think I have my finger on the pulse of the industry, but I didn’t even realize this debut was out this week. Very excited to check it out, though.
“an enticing and gritty start to this small-town vigilante justice comic”
What I’m Currently Reading
Honestly, I haven’t read too much in the last week. Not compared to my usual overachieving list, anyway. My younger brother was in town over the weekend, so instead of reading I spent some time sitting six feet apart from him, drinking bourbon and BSing.
I did read the new issue of SUICIDE SQUAD though, because it’s one of the few series where I have to read the new issue as soon as I can get my hands on it. I can’t believe I’m saying that about a Suicide Squad comic, but it’s simply an incredible run by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, and company. It’s funny, it’s action packed, and it’s Taylor doing what he does best, which is making you care about characters you have no business caring about. You can read our full review of the issue on MFR here.
I’ve been really into classic cinema again lately, too. I used to watch a lot of it in college, and that itch suddenly came back to me in the last few weeks. Recently I’ve watched THE 39 STEPS and KISS ME DEADLY, and I have a little Akira Kurosawa lineup planned for myself. Sometimes you need to break up all the comics you read with a three-and-a-half hour samurai epic.
Other than that, I managed to squeeze in the first volumes of DEAD EYES and MONEY SHOT, both of which I had been eagerly awaiting, and neither of which disappointed. And I finally started the final arc of BLEACH, which has been an ongoing saga for me. I’m ashamed to say how long it’s taken me to get through this series, but I genuinely love it and I’m afraid that no shōnen manga I read after will live up to it in my mind. Maybe that’s why I’m dragging it out so long.
