Gobble gobble, comics fans! EIC Anthony here, and it is Thanksgiving week here in the U.S.
I just want to say, from all of us at MFR, we are so thankful for YOU — our readers, followers, subscribers, and friends. MFR is a total labor of love for everyone involved. We all have full-time jobs, families, and personal lives; we create for MFR out of sheer passion and love for comics, and the reason we’re able to continue doing it is because you all read our stuff, share it around the internet, and support our publications.
So thank you, and have a happy Thanksgiving full of delicious food, whether you’re celebrating small, or with family in a safe, socially-distanced manner. I myself will be making a pecan pie, and although I’ve never made one before, I’m staking my claim that it will be the finest pecan pie ever made.
I don’t want to sour that genuine moment of gratitude, but I have to mention that there are just 8 days left in our KICKSTARTER DOUBLE FEATURE. We are in the home stretch, and we would love to hit a few more stretch goes before we close it out.
I know I threw some thanks your way already, but I just want to double down and say how much we appreciate your support on this campaign so far. Please continue to share the link with your friends and followers so we can finish strong and set ourselves a high bar for next time!!
Heather Antos Talks The New World Of X-O MANOWAR
Matt Sardo interviewed Valiant editor Heather Antos about the new X-O MANOWAR series, and they discussed team building, the process of putting the book together, and the impact that COVID-19 had on the team.
Advanced Review: HOME SICK PILOTS #1 — Monster House for Punk Adults
AJ O. Mason took an early look at HOME SICK PILOTS, coming out December 9th, and calls it “an extraordinary series every comic reader should watch out for.” Personally, I’m down for anything with Caspar Wijngaard art.
Interview: Catching up With COPRA And Michel Fiffe
Interviewer-extraordinaire Manny Gomez chatted with cartoonist Michel Fiffe recently and got the full scoop on COPRA — what’s been going on with the series, and Fiffe’s plans moving forward as he returns to self-publishing the book himself.
Review: FRANK AT HOME ON THE FARM #1 — Scared and Confused
AJ O. Mason also reviewed the debut issue of FRANK AT HOME ON THE FARM, a new psychological horror miniseries from Scout comics. I’m a sucker for long book titles myself, as well as for psychological horror, plus AJ says it’s great, so this is one for my own reading list.
Review: LONESOME DAYS SAVAGE NIGHTS Is A Brutal Emotional Journey Through Anger
Darryll Robson reviewed LONESOME DAYS, SAVAGE NIGHTS, part of TKO Present’s Wave 3, and calls it a “hard-boiled horror comic,” and “an exciting take on the Wolfman…steeped in modern sensibilities.”
Oh, what have I been reading? How kind of you to ask.
I started reading URBAN ANIMAL on Webtoon this week, and it’s so much fun. It’s about Joe Gomez, a high-schooler who learns that he is actually a shape-shifting Chimera, and he needs to help save the world. It’s by Justin Jordan and John Amor, and even though I’m not that far into the series yet, I’m loving every panel. It’s classic “teenager gets powers and reluctantly steps into a greater world” coming-of-age stuff, a la early Spider-Man. The art is cartoony and bright, the characters are likeable and interesting — highly recommended.
Also on Webtoon, I finished reading TOASTER DUDE by creative team “littlebobler” and “soaporsalad” this week. This is a much sillier kind of comic than URBAN ANIMAL, but just as fun and addicting. The humor is great, especially if you’re a fan of ONE PUNCH MAN.
Lastly (I got a lot of reading done this week), my order of TKO books arrived, and I binged all three of the new TKO Shorts. They’re all stellar, but NIGHT TRAIN was probably my favorite — a macabre tale by Steve Foxe and Lisandro Estherren about a spectral train with a ghostly conductor who promises to take your problems away. Then there is SEEDS OF EDEN (by Liana Kangas, Joe Corallo, & Paul Azaceta), a cosmic horror story in the vein of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, and THE FATHER OF ALL THINGS (by Sebastian Girner and Baldemar Rivas), a story about the allure of going to war and the reality of being at war, with some supernatural spookies thrown in. The shorts are $2.99 each at TKO’s website, so it’s a very minimal cost of entry for some top-notch stories.
COMIC STRIP • TALES OF MFR #75
Oh hot damn, THIS is my jam. I’m a sucker for transformation sequences like this.
Just tuning in and wondering who this behemoth is? Catch up on the series here: TALES OF MFR
The war between monkeys and robots has raged on for eons; these are the stories that have survived. With art by Jamie Jones and the occasional words by Matt Sardo, Tales of MFR hits the web every Sunday.
For more reviews, interviews, and “Legends of the Longbox”, head over to the website to see what the team’s been working on this week:
That’s all for now! Remember: Darkseid is… but so are we.
Until next week,
