MFR Newsletter 10/31/2020 — This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Happy Halloween, comics fans! EIC Anthony here to wish you all a happy and safe holiday.
Going to keep this week’s newsletter appropriately spooky with mostly horror-themed articles (and a little crime thrown in for good measure!).
I Don’t Dare Turn the Page — How Horror Works Within the Comics Medium
Justin Munday wrote this awesome editorial about how horror works in comics, focusing heavily on one of a comic creator’s greatest weapons: the page turn.
Advance Review: BURN RESIDUE #1 Ignites One Sizzling Crime Story
Manny Gomez breaks down the first issue of BURN RESIDUE, a new three-issue crime series currently on Kickstarter. You can read the premise on the campaign page, but it’s being billed as “the dark side of noir, the side that never makes it to the sunlight,” and I won’t like, I backed the book immediately after reading Manny’s review.
Review: The End is Nigh in JOHN CONSTANTINE: HELLBLAZER #11
Zac Owens reviews the penultimate issue of JOHN CONSTANTINE: HELLBLAZER, which has been one of DC’s most acclaimed series of late. It’s smart, witty, spooky… it’s Constantine at his best. If you haven’t picked up this series yet, you’re missing out.
DRY FOOT #1 – Great Introduction To A Fun Crime Comic
New reviewer AJ O. Mason takes a look at Mad Cave’s DRY FOOT #1, a crime story set in 1980’s Miami.
“Highly recommended for fans of comedic crime stories like the Bad Boys films, the Ocean's franchise, and Martin McDonagh's earlier films.”
Review: THE AUTUMNAL #2 — Horror Via Family Drama
Justin Munday discusses THE AUTUMNAL #2 from Vault:
“…a brilliant character-driven chapter that sells this comic as a slow-burn horror experience while maintaining a uniquely unnerving atmosphere.”
Our next Kickstarter launches TOMORROW, NOVEMBER 1st!
We’re funding both MFR: THE MAGAZINE #2 and TALES OF MFR #2 together as a double feature to pack this campaign with as much face-melting insanity as we can.
You can check out the Kickstarter by clicking right here, and please be sure to share it with your comics-loving friends and family! These books are a total labor of love put together by people who simply love comics and want to celebrate them.
I’ll have much more to say about the campaign after it launches, but thank you all in advance for your continued support of all things MFR!
And please VOTE this Tuesday if you haven’t already!!
For more reviews, interviews, and “Legends of the Longbox”, head over to the website to see what the team’s been working on this week:
That’s all for now! Remember: Darkseid is… but so are we.
Until next week,
