MFR Newsletter 10/10/2020 — No TV and no beer make Homer something something...
Spooky salutations, comics people! EIC Anthony here to brighten your weekend with colorful comic chatter.
I won’t lie: I haven’t read much lately. Between work, personal responsibilities, and it being 2020 and all, I just haven’t had the mental energy to enjoy comics. I don’t know about any of you, but if I’m mentally exhausted, I have a real hard time digesting what I read.
Instead, I’ve been filling my free time lately with video games. I’ve gotten back into gaming this past year in a biiiig way. Right now, I’m pouring all my time into retro games and remasters thanks to Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and holy crap are those great for short bursts of distracting yourself from the news and your responsibilities. The best part is how little mental energy they require. There’s no grand, involved story to follow; you just zone out and smash some boxes or collect some item. 10/10 highly recommended.
But this last week, I’ve started catching up on comics again, and — let me tell you — there’s very little that feels as good as jumping back into a story that you love after some time away.
We all love comics, and we all need some escapism right now. But, if I may be so bold as to say, it’s important to have more than one form of escapism. On that note, not all of your escapism should take the form of a screen. Take up a new hobby. Learn a craft. Go for a bike ride. Do it all in a safe and socially distanced way. I promise you: diversifying your interests will only strengthen your love and appreciation for each of them. And, of course, comics will still reign supreme.
Interview: Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum Explains How X-O MANOWAR Fits In Today’s World
Matt Sardo talked with Dennis Hallum about the new X-O MANOWAR series at Valiant, and how the writer is taking one of the 90’s quintessential characters and updating him for 2020.
Review: SCARENTHOOD #1 Is This Halloween’s Must-Read Comic
I’ve talked a lot about SCARENTHOOD these last few weeks. I recommended it, I interviewed writer/artist Nick Roche, and now I’ve given it the official review treatment.
Review: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #850 – A Spectacular Super-Sized Experience
David Weber takes a look at the new milestone Spidey comic, which is also apparently Ryan Ottley’s final issue as artist.
Review: The Joker War Comes to a Close in BATMAN #100
Another superhero milestone, Jody Cardona reviews BATMAN #100, the epic conclusion to the “Joker War” storyline. I won’t lie, this run has had its ups and downs for me, but I’ve stuck with it solely because Jorge Jimenez is one of the best superhero artists working today and I’ll buy a book just to ogle his work.
COMIC STRIP • TALES OF MFR #70
This is my favorite arc of TALES OF MFR so far. I’m a sucker for little ragtag crews fighting against unbelievable odds.
Catch up on the series here: TALES OF MFR
The war between monkeys and robots has raged on for eons; these are the stories that have survived. With art by Jamie Jones and the occasional words by Matt Sardo, Tales of MFR hits the web every Sunday.
For more reviews, interviews, and “Legends of the Longbox”, head over to the website to see what the team’s been working on this week:
That’s all for now! Remember: Darkseid is… but so are we.
Until next week,
